What Is Moodle?

Moodle is a web-based Learning Management System. It provides tools for organizing online courses, managing learners, delivering learning content, supporting assessments, and tracking participation.

Moodle is open source, which means organizations can download, install, use, configure, and extend it. Many institutions use Moodle because it is flexible, widely adopted, and supported by a large global community.

In simple terms, Moodle is the platform where:

  • Administrators manage the site.
  • Teachers manage courses.
  • Students access learning materials and complete activities.
  • Managers or department heads may review reports.
  • Technical staff maintain the system infrastructure.

Moodle is not only a website. It is a full application that depends on several technical components, including a web server, a database, background scheduled tasks, file storage, authentication methods, and optional integrations.
